The Avatar: The Last Airbender animated movie was leaked online in April 2026, roughly six months ahead of its official 9th October release date.
Ever since then, the fanfic world has exploded into edits, fanarts and AO3 uploads expanding the Fire Lord Zuko agenda, officially entering a perpetual Flameo Hotman state of emergency.
Ultraslowed Russian funk in the backdrop of our fine shyt from 2005… Yes, we have finally returned to our roots. Or jogged towards our roots. Or well, full-on sprinted back to our roots.
The leak hit AO3 like a small-scale natural disaster. It was apparently enough to reactivate dormant fanfic authors from across the globe.
Fans who had not touched Avatar fanfiction in years suddenly returned to the fandom, with some openly describing the leak as the thing that “brought them out of retirement.”
In fact, the number of Avatar fanfiction on AO3 at least tripled. March 2026 Avatar fanfiction made up 15 AO3 pages—April and May 2026 both reached 50.
Of course, Zutara, Kataang and Zukka have officially resumed combat operations (if the ship war ever truly ended at all).
Kataang shippers are using the movie leaks as the ultimate validation, but the film has also revived adverse pushback from Zutara shippers, some of whom joked about adult Katara cheating on Aang with Zuko (although most fans called the joke a massive disservice to Katara’s character).
Instead, reports of the leak indicate Zuko and Katara barely interact or share dialogue. Here, Zukka shippers immediately took advantage of the straight-people-drama to have a little fun with the entire leaked script chaos.
In fact, Bi Zuko Truthers returned in full force to revive decade-old headcanons almost overnight.
Many argued Zuko’s emotional arc in the original series mirrors the LGBTQ+ youth experience, as the storyline revolves around themes like dealing with conditional love, strict parental expectations, getting cast out of his home for voicing his true thoughts, or hiding his true identity under the Blue Spirit mask. (Plus all the opposites-attract tropes for Zukka are not making the allegations any better).
But the fandom theories exploded into mainstream discussion due to a zesty little scene that was leaked from The Legend of Aang.
In the scene, an adult Fire Lord Zuko allegedly describes another man as ‘very attractive’ based on his bone structure. This moment immediately went crazy viral across platforms like TikTok and Reddit, as everyone saw it as a soft-canon confirmation of his bisexuality.
Speaking of social media, insane, fire Zuko video edits have reached hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok and Instagram, while Tumblr and X have been swarmed by fanarts.
I mean, we all knew Zuko was going to get that super long hair and top-knot upgrade. Somebody in that animation studio absolutely knew what they were doing. They knew exactly who their audience was and understood exactly what kind of psychological damage they were unleashing onto the internet.
We also know the fandom imagined Adult Zuko long before canon ever did, as fanfiction has seen Fire Lord Zuko on AO3 since 2010.
The leaked film not only brought back the Zuko-obsessives; the internet reacted not just to his canon glow-up. They reacted to the version of Zuko they had already written and read about thousands of times before (although, seriously, what did they feed him?).
Avatar fanfiction has seen Zuko and the intimacy of finally having a family after years of hurt and loneliness. It has built on his sense of belonging in the Gaang long before the film was even made. Now, the film gave visual confirmation to something the fandom had emotionally invested in for years.
So the internet’s reaction to Adult Zuko is not just about attraction or nostalgia. It is also about growing up alongside these characters and suddenly seeing them grown up too.
In fact, everyone in the fandom agrees on the same thing: seeing them as adults feels surreal, because we all grew up watching them as kids.
Twenty-one years since its original release, the fandom is older, louder and still catastrophically down bad for Zuko.
Some things never change.
