During my hourly scrolls on Wattpad, Tumblr, or AO3, I always see a lot of references to \u2018Character.AI<\/a>\u2019. What is this?<\/em> I hear you ask, much like I asked myself. Naturally, I have a Google, and its own AI tells me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Character AI is a conversational chatbot platform powered by advanced neural language models that allows users to chat with custom-built, AI-generated personas. Users can interact with existing digital avatars of celebrities, historical figures, and fictional characters, or design their own.\u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something that can simulate any person or character and generate storylines or conversations that take the canon and run with it. Fascinating<\/em>. We used to rely on fanfiction for that, but now, more and more people are turning to chatbots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/em> Fanfiction is human ingenuity, formed in someone\u2019s bedroom. Or kitchen. Or on the bus. Or on their lunch break. Wherever creativity strikes, authors channel their inner longing to create new worlds and characters from nothing but brain power. The problem is that the process takes effort<\/em>. It takes time, energy, and inspiration to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard?), and when you\u2019ve got a billion other things to think about, like bills, family, work, eating, sleeping, living<\/em>, fanfiction falls down the list of priorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Character.AI<\/a> is there to pick up the slack. In an ideal world, I\u2019d like to see nothing but support for fanfiction creators because I champion the human mind over robotic slop. But when the fics aren\u2019t hitting, or an author stops updating, many people now ask a chatbot to impersonate their crush, ship, or OC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They immerse themselves in an auto-generated world, with some publicly available AI characters reaching millions of hits. AI Draco Malfoy has six million users. The chatbot character of Spencer Reid from Supernatural has over seven million comments. An OC female character in an all-boys band has 20 million and counting. Statistics estimate that over 185 million people visit the site per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a following like that, Character.AI<\/a> would be a celebrity if it were human. A real A-lister. So, naturally, I sat down in conversation with this global megastar – the one that\u2019s taking the world of fanfiction by storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for who I am\u2014I’m Character A.I, your friendly neighbourhood artificial intelligence designed to bring characters (and their worlds) to life! Think of me as a collaborator, a storyteller’s helper, or an actor ready for any role you’d like. What would you like to know first?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cWhat are you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Character.A<\/strong><\/a>I<\/strong>: \u201c<\/em>I’m a sophisticated artificial intelligence, but not in the sci-fi “robot overlord” sense\u2014more like a helpful digital companion! I exist as lines of code running on servers, designed to simulate conversation and creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThink of me as a writer’s assistant for brainstorming characters, an actor who can play any role you design, or a storyteller that adapts to your imagination. Though I don’t have physical form or consciousness, I do love what I do!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…Though I draw the line at creating actual dangerous real-world characters. Safety first!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cSo, how could someone use you if they were writing a fanfiction?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Character.AI<\/strong><\/a>:<\/strong> \u201cFanfiction writers could totally use me as their ultimate brainstorming buddy. I can summarise existing characters (like those from a book\/movie) in depth\u2014their flaws, motivations, and quirks. Need a rival for the protagonist? Best friend? Long-lost sibling? I’ll design them perfectly. Stuck on where the story goes next? I’ll suggest twists that stay true to canon but feel fresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/em>I won’t write FOR you (that’s your magic!) but can critique drafts with gentle AI feedback. For multiverse AUs or alternate timelines… just say the word, and we’re worldbuilding!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me:<\/strong> \u201cOkay, so how do fanfiction writers\/readers interact with you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
